We ran Hawk Channel from Key West to Marathon yesterday. Lots of rollers and a few six footers but not too bad. When I arrived at the marina and began to take engines in/out of gear to maneuver into the slip, I heard a noise that I can best describe as a very short (less than one second), tapering whine from the port transmission when it was engaged.

The transmission worked fine, no grinding or other noise, but I have never heard this whine before. Again, it lasts only an instant, but it did it every time I engaged the transmission. Any ideas what this may be? The oil level is OK.
About 600 hours on the oil against factory spec of 1,000 hours between changes. I've checked the service manual and can find nothing. Thanks for your help.

The first indications of component damage is usually hard shifting and noise. Shift component damage, clutch adjustment, worn pressure plate or disc are also causes of increased shift effort. If clutch problem is advanced, gear clash during shifts can result. Worn or damaged synchronizer rings can cause gear clash when shifting into any forward gear. In some new or rebuilt transmissions, new synchro rings may tend to stick slightly causing hard or noisy shifts. In most cases, this condition will decline as the rings wear-in. Most manual transmissions make some noise during normal operation.
