Sorry for the long post.it's what two years of pent up hacking will do. Hi, it's been a long time since contributing here but I still see get the updates to this post. Been wanting to do this since my installation about 2 years ago, got involved in a social networking company that takes all my time and then some, yet still managing time to enjoy (but not post about) the SLK350 that I'm so fond of. The obstacle for me is that this customization, while entirely doable by any enthusiast, requires more pictures and video and notes than is practical for the SLKworld forum format. I love this forum, it's one of my favorite sites of all time because of the great community here - wonderful people - but this sort of documentation is really better suited to iFixIt with step by step instructions and pictures, a site I've looked at but not tried to post to. If someone would help me organize and pull all this together I'd be more motivated.

Even though the initial installation 2 years ago proved to be an amazing upgrade, I continue to refine it to this very day (yes, today) including writing software to enhance the Pandora's box of putting video on the COMAND screen, creating wall paper to match my SLK dash, etc. It became something of an addiction and has gone far beyond my original idea, so if you really want to do this let's do it.

But I need the help of one or more SLKWorld members to pull this off. When you find out what the stock NTG1 Navi is really capable of with no more effort that a typical car stereo swap you'll wonder why everybody doesn't do this. It's MB Love Techno Crack. I would prefer to work with someone who can call or Skype, or possibly even in the SoCal area a reasonable drive to Camarillo.

If you're in the SoCal area and want to install one in your R171 I might even offer to say bring your car over and we could do an installation together and refine my photos and notes along the way. BTW, the hardest part was routing the wire from the cam through the hinge and trunk and I would not do that again. Use a video transmitter instead. So it's now a quicker mod, same day. There is a shop 5 minutes from here I haven't used but I showed him mine and the installer thinks he could do it in a day for a reasonable flat fee. So, if your less adventurous consider a good car audio place.

It's connecting your COMAND NTG1 to your smart phone. I'm having a crazy time in life but will try to round up everything I have on this and, with the help of someone else here - step up, brothers - would make a serious effort to get the instructions and photos online, with all the missing steps that WIS doesn't describe plus the simple mod to the head unit that makes no sense whatsoever in the instructions that came with the video interface module I bought. My partner just had his late model CLK in the shop at Calabasas and got a new loaded C-Class loaner with Sirius and embrace2 active.

What a class act and clever move by MB of Calabasas to spoil us and make us want a newer car! We really love that dealership. So then I sat in the driveway literally for hours playing with the telematics. I'm not bragging because i don't create this stuff, I just assemble and leverage it, but what I've managed to get out of my NTG1 COMAND NAVI interfaced to an iPhone 4S (and probably works as well with Android, if that's how you swing) is in many ways better than the newest COMAND with embrace2. Plus, it's several times faster running off a smart phone. Don't even compare the text entry mechanisms. The NTG1 screen rez isn't as high but it's fine.

And while not limitless, I've found an ideal collection of apps and a couple Cydia hacks that will make new car owners jealous. And it's still OEM with all the stock functionality, and I even still use the built in stuff, too. What started this whole habit was that early on I wrote a browser add-on to interface Google maps with the NTG1 COMAND's built-in Navigation to send coordinates from any location right from the browser, yes - for use with NTG1. It also just so happens to not require an embrace subscription (hey MB, I paid for embrace thinking it already did this with my car, and if you'd thought of the solution I created I'd rather just use your service, but you don't love NTG1 anymore and won't support it. To me, embrace is worth it even without this feature, anyway). I thought about marketing this as a free service, but it's probably a niche and might even piss off MB, not my goal.

If someone reading this knows what LAMP web apps are, knows enough javascript to send some JSON to work with a MySQL database, we'd be pretty much done extending it in a day plus test time to make it multiuser. I could do this but don't have time, so for now it's hard coded to my one and only account.

But I'd love to share it with NTG1 owners. This has no requirement to have a video interface, but it's what got me hooked on hacking the COMAND NTG1 and then wanting a video interface. I'd honestly love to share the installation steps and pics and all the above, so help make it possible, help to turn my photos and notes into the final thing. Maybe even more.

Would be really great if someone in SoCal near Ventura County was in on it for face to face meetings. Sorry for the lengthy and long overdue post, but OCD-esque developers like myself can obviously go for years without asking for help to get this done & out.

I mentioned the site above because that's what it specializes in and has perfected the format. My preference is that it be part of SLKWorld because the site owner/moderators are providing a great resource. I've met one and he's even a great guy. If one of them has any suggestions for where or how on SLKWorld to easily create a similar how-to format please chime in. It's likely to be over 50 steps not because it's really complicated but it needs to be clear and simple with a picture for each step, vs say WIS-style instructions of merely 'Using special tool # remove the shift console fascia' with the assumption the mechanic knows how and precisely where to insert and use the tool to unclip it without breaking the clips or facia.

E.g., I intend to show how to modify a readily available household item to make the tool in the first place, a CU hi-rez color image of what the underlying clips actually look like so you know what you're unhooking, and then demonstrate the removal technique it at the exact insertion points. And that's just one example. Maybe the whole tutorial should just be a YouTube video?

Who out there is good at iMovie so we could share the project file? SoCalBeachRunner, aside from rear-view camera what other capabilites have you added (applies to NGT 1.0)? If you would kindly enumerate/elaborate and add to the short list below: 1. Rear-view camera (what camera, cables, adapters are need?) 2. Video play (what additional modules or parts are needed?), play movie DVD?

Or play from downloaded programs in a tablet? Integration with iPhone (will iPhone 5 work? Are SMS displayed? What adapters, cables are needed? How about integratiion with iPad?) I would think someone in SoCal would be interested.

And others (like Durk and myself)may make this a weekend meet in Camarillo. You may be able to do something similar to the DIY on smartTop install (moderators can keep it 'clean' by not allowing anyone to post in the thread until the entire DIY steps are complete)? This shows some of the capabilities of the aftermarket video interface I purchased and connected to the OEM COMAND NTG1 in my 2006 SLK350 and interfaced to an iPhone 4s. This should work with other MB models that have NTG1, and other SmartPhones with composite video out, or for newer digital-only devices in conjunction with an inexpensive ($30) digital-to-composite video adapter.

Audio works the same over either AUX IN or Bluetooth (your choice). All the COMAND built-in audio prompts still fade up and down over the SmartPhone additions (since COMAND is still in control) as well as the SmartPhone apps' own audio prompts fading up/down under control of the phone. DISCLAIMER: Since this was created for my own personal use only, it uses logos and service names similar to those owned by Mercedes-Benz but is in no way affiliated with Mercedes-Benz or the embrace service, and requires no accounts or subscriptions to those services. I'm an enthusiastic fan of MB & embrace and have no intention of circumventing their systems or trademarks. Names and logos are purely cosmetic choices to decorate the user interface. All enhanced functionality shown is an entirely separate set of apps and services. Note that the iPhone 4s seen here has been jailbroken to permit the video out and enhanced screen rotations.

The white blocks in the video are to obscure personal information. The SmartPhone end of the service is written in Javascript and is likely to work with other phone platforms besides iOS; the server side that powers it runs as a service that I created and currently operate as the sole user. And, yes, it also does the expected stuff: - backup cam - plays any video the iPhone can play, including Netflix and podcasts over Sprint 3G. Although it's capable of video playback 'in-motion,' for a screen that the driver can observe that's illegal in many places and dangerous everywhere so I'm not demo'ing that capability in this video. If there's interest and help, we can collaborate to organize my installation pictures and notes for the SLK how-to so that any enthusiast with a few tools and the desire to have this can pull this off in a garage or driveway.

The video interface that makes this possible is a few hundred dollars; SLKStore sells one that sounds nice but I haven't personally used; mine is a Chinese unit purchased online. The software is very inexpensive, and the proprietary service I created, Navility, could be adapted for others to join if there's interest.

Parts list (see subsequent message with links & more details): 1. 'W211 video interface for MB with COMAND' or equivalent video box.

The box includes all the necessary cables (there aren't many); can be installed so the SmartPhone to video interface is triggered by an one or all of the following: (a) the OEM 'NAVI' button (requires soldering on the board of your COMAND, no big deal. Seriously, it's easy) (b) the IR remote that comes with the kit (c) a momentary pushbutton that comes with the kit.

Check SLK Store or ebay for 'video interface SLK W211' 2. Apple brand or after market equivalent composite video cable, available in the Apple store or Amazon or eBay. Mine is a SKIVA D102 Media Adapter for my iPhone 4S. If you have a newer all-digital iPhone 5 or newer, you'll need the equivalent plus a digital-to-composite converter, also available on Amazon where I've seen them for about $30. The video interface accepts only composite video ('the yellow cable') 3. 30-pin iPhone/iPod extenstion cable for iPhone 4s.

Optional, depending how you chose to position things. The SKIVA cable is fine for the glove box but you're need more if you want the connector in the center console phone compartment. Search on line and be sure it has all the necessary wiring to support composite video and analogue audio; most cables have only the necessary minimum wires for charging and sync. You'll need to route the analog AUDIO OUT from the phone's adapter L/R to the COMAND AUX IN. You might splice it.

I preferred to route the cable into the rear of the glove box and just plug into the existing AUX IN jack. Rear view cam is a generic Chinese unit. It's getting so easy to find these it's barely worth mentioning. I purchased it from the same seller as the video interface. You can buy them at Fry's Electronics in SoCal or many places online. It's standard composit video out so just pick the style you like. I wanted a license plate version but it was out of stock so I went with a tiny barrel cam that required drilling a 1/4' hole in the plastic above the license plate, out of site really.

Plus small set screw. SMS displays beautifully in landscape mode on the screen. SIRI reads them to you, of course. Have not tested this with iPad, only the 4s. Since it has 2 composite video inputs in addition to the one dedicated to the backup cam, you could hook up the second to anything: DVD, TiVO, jack for use with your passenger's smartphone, etc. Kind of cool, I wish I wasn't forced to see your hairy legs though I am more interested in the steps to set up the back-up cam with comand and if you care, it shows your name: John Parsons in several placesWarned you it was rough.

I spent my Nair time shooting the video. I've got shots of the backup cam functionality, will post that for you but it looks about the same as the Google Streets images, only moving toward you and from behind. The camera is purchased separately from the video interface, there are many choices, some superimpose lines or more over the image; mine doesn't. After installation it took just a minute to learn that if something on the ground touches the bottom of the frame it's 18' away. Traveling mattes to cover my phone number were time consuming enough so I left it in there - it's the Facebook era: hey, everybody look at me Here's the parts list including alternatives. Some earlier adopters have found incompatibilities so I'm indicating my exact purchases that are verified to work as shown using Thumbs Up Smiley 1. Video interface.

Essentially 2 parts: A small board that you insert inside the COMAND head unit (HU) after you open it up, and an external box you mount inside the dash/console a few inches from the (HU). It connects to your backup lamp circuit to automatically switch to/from the backup cam. It must have at least one add'l input that will be used by your Smartphone.

Some of these offer a third input as well. The kit I chose includes the cables, switches & IR remote. It has incomplete instructions in broken English, but we're going to solve that for you. Along with a 2nd input for your phone, it allows a 3rd video input that could be hooked up to any composite source: front night vision camera, DVD player, your spouse/girl/boyfriend's video cable on their phone, etc. Plus, it permits any combination of three ways to switch to the 2nd and 3rd inputs: your existing NAV button (nice!), their push button you'll have to mount somewhere, their IR receiver w/ remote., says it has solid state switches Hoangcao243 suggests this 2a. Video-out cable/adapter for iPhone with 30-pin For iOS devices with a 30-pin connector (analog audio & composite video out) or also verified to work or Optionally, if you want the connector cable inside the center console like the newer OEM installation, you'll need to extend the cable & snake around inside the console. The cable must explicitly state that it supports audio out and composite video with no incompatibility warnings.

Most cables do not have this and support only charging & synching so check before you buy. Exact two products I use, verified with Skiva video adapter and mObridge Bluetooth iPod interface ABT2010-MBZ-F: 6 feet 1 meter, tested to work with Skiva and mObridge.

IPhone 5 users with the added component of the HDMI-to-Composite converter may need dual USB ports since the converter accepts power. UPDATE: Some cheap ones lack noise filtering and result in horrible video noise. If you have video noise a low quality USB adapter is probably the culprit. If installed behind the dash just solder to its terminals, or better yet add a neat socket inside your glovebox or console for $3.50 4. Backup camera.

Any car backup camera that outputs composite video should work, the choice, source is up to you. They are all over the internet starting at $20. I went with a tiny barrel cam from GSM Server, the For the SLK, it's easy to attach the barrel style to the plastic 'ceiling' above the license plate as I've done. Their are license plate cams, too.

The 2.4g Wireless Color Video Transmitter & Reciever for backup cam I didn't know these existed and dismantled my trunk liner and ran the wire all the way through the trunk lid, with the wire loom at the hinge, through the bulkhead channel, behind the driver's seat and through the console to the dash. I'd use one of these instead. There's plenty of room in side the trunk deck lid to tuck the transmitter. Untested but seems sensible - Here's one by the manufacture of the video interface box I used. (I'm testing it this week for image quality) Search Amazon (haven't tested it). More details for installation and hookup to come. The Apps Here's what I've got so far.

We need an Android user to help figure out the best apps for it. Also an iPad user to check rotation and layout. And if there's a Windows Phone user who wants to contribute we show no prejudice. A) Jailbreak: SBRotator 6 Provides Home screen rotation, landscape mode for many apps that don't have it built in, locks landscape mode when connected to withstand SLK g-forces. B) Jailbreak: Display Out Mirrors the screen. Maybe not needed for phones 4s. Alternatively try TVOutTuner c) Jailbreak: MyAssistant Extends Siri to deliver a true Eyes Free capability to launch or switch to nearly any app, maps, songs, etc.

The current favorite COMAND NTG1-to-SmartPhone apps as seen in the demo video: a) FlickTunes - navigate your playlists 'eyes free' by swiping and flicking, plus the best display of album artwork and info I've found b) Clear Day (FREE Version) - inspired to use this after seeing the weather app in COMAND ONLINE in that new C-Class loaner. This app has stunningly beautiful screen you can leave on as a clock + weather if you're in the mood. C) Goolge Maps - need I say more? D) Honk - not demo'ed but a great app for remembering where you left your car and how much time is left on the meter. E) Alarm Clock - A basic clock f) Navility - not yet available to the general public, my own solution and service for formatting and transmitting geo coordinates in the format identical to COMAND NTG1.

Mobile and desktop. Hoping to find some beta testers to see if anyone else is interested in this.

G) - Plenty of free channels, thousands more for $5, sounds good. Much more to this app than meets the eye at first, be sure to dig into the search when browsing for channels. Better have an unlimited data plan. H), to help pass the time when you're parked and waiting i) - Social real time traffic maps.

I've been participating in projects aimed at this behind the scenes for over a year now.

If you follow this you know Mercedes-Benz signed on a long time ago (Steve Jobs drove an SL). The sort of things in the demo video here are the tip of the iceberg for what's coming soon. I'm shifting focus onto this starting this week.

You are really going to want a video interface to your smartphone for your COMAND head unit, especially if you have an iOS device. My personal goal is to make as much of this work going as far back as NTG1 as is practical, including work on some new low cost accessories to enhance/fill the gap with OEM COMAND. As a member of the Apple developer program I'll be thinking about iOS first but Google's platform is too big to overlook and ahead of the game right now in some ways. So stay tuned, COMAND users with smartphones who wish your toys played together. And you thought Ninja Turtles / Barbie were fun (not judging anybody there).

I do have one question which will determine which video interface I will purchase, and that is why is there a need to soldier a wire internally to the board?

Instructions show it being soldiered to the NAV button. What if I have NAV installed in the 171?

Does it switch in-between the two and still work properly? Or can I put in on one of the other leads to a button I don't use? Thanks again, this is awesome! LOL - that guy was me. Turns out they made good on it. They had a temporary quality control issue and problem with customer service that they solved so I've amended the comment and now have no reservations in recommending them, and even bought a second one for another car. LuckyScooby & I kicked off the how-to today.

We'll distill everything down to something like the following: - grid to quickly see all the parts and options based on your phone. WIS-like step by step to install the video interface to the head unit - step by step to install the cable into the center console/glovebox - step by step to install a backup cam - suggested apps and tips for the phone end of the deal - future directions From our PM YOU ONLY NEED TO SOLDER INSIDE THE HU IF.

You only need to solder a wire inside the HU if you want to have the NAVI button control the video input selection, at least with the brand I purchased. Otherwise, you can control the video source using the included IR Remote or the included momentary switch placed wherever you like it. If you've ever noticed, a single press of the NAVI button points COMAND on the NAVI screen. Pressing more times does nothing (like most of the other buttons). If a certain lead wire is soldered inside the HU to connect a particular spot of the COMAND motherboard to the kit's daughterboard inside the case, then each press of the NAVI button will manually cycle the active video input that's connected to the external component of the kit. I don't think that wire is merely voltage or ground, might be a TTL circuit.

It works only for NAVI button. You can't use a different button. One of their techs once mentioned that he thought it would be possible to use a different button, e.g. SERV, but he had no details.

If you go poking around on your COMAND motherboard and this kit's daughterboard without more information you might damage something so I wouldn't try it. At time of installation you set dip switches to determine which of the available inputs is active; the backup cam connector is dedicated and triggered by a wire you'll attach to a point in the backup light circuit. In my installation, I use only one of the two remaining available inputs (for the smartphone), with the switches currently set to ignore the third input. While I was installing I wired the third input to an RCA video-in female connector that I installed in the glove box next to the AUX IN jack MB put there (future expansion). So, connect your phone, press a button and listen to music with album art displaying on COMAND. Or fire up Google Maps and drive with 3-D maps and real time traffic.

The phone is integrated and out of site. If you have BlueTooth, you can use Siri to change songs, and read and dictate SMS. TODO: I think I know how to integrate this with the CAN-bus for steering wheel control, will need to find some parts in Hong Kong and get out the soldering iron. PARTS VARY BY PHONE, STILL EXPERIMENTING FOR non-iPHONE 4S Double check that you're acquiring the same components - or not - to at least know if it's a proven set of parts. Specifically, I snaked the video cable from the back up cam at the trunk all the way to the head unit but you should try the inexpensive transmitter/receiver they sell first because it will be a lot less work, and if it sucks it's cheap and can you can easily try a different brand or route the video cable after the fact. Probably even resell the t/r on eBay if the signal is too weak for use in the SLK trunk lid. It took me a full day to route the cable through the hinge and access channel.

If you just want to the backup cam, you can skip this paragraph for smartphone users: The other thing is I have a jailbroken iPhone 4s that works perfectly with the interface but have not tested it with other phones. You don't have to have a jailbreak for some of the apps, but it is necessary (at least for the 4s) in order to see the home screen with all the icons on the head unit, which to me is a 'must-have' look. Overall it's just a better experience because the iPhone screen can function as a darkened 'Eyes Free' touch surface.

If you happen to use something other than the iPhone 4/4s with the composite video out adapter cable then you're the guinea pig! TEST DRIVE BEFORE YOU BUY Before starting any work on your car test your phone's composite video out using a TV set with a yellow composite RCA connector. If you have an Android phone let us know if it works. We also want to hear if the home screen displays onto an external display using the Apple Lightening-to-HDMI cable along with an HDMI-to-composite converter box for an iPhone 5 with and without a jailbreak.

For that matter, anyone considering this should hook up their smartphone to the TV composite input and pretend you're looking at your COMAND screen to understand what the final effect will be. Consider downloading the suggested Apps and more, play with it. Still having fun? Then it's time to get moving up your video interface. IPhone users with a jailbroken device will want 'SBRotator 6' to make iPhone mirror nearly everything in landscape mode and locked to withstand the G-forces inside an SLK. Also, you'll need 'Display Out' to mirror everything on the external screen and in the proper aspect ratio; otherwise, you'll only benefit from Apps that are built to take advantage of external displays. The best ones do: Google Maps, FlickTunes and Clear Day.

And Netflix for only when you're parked. If you live near Ventura County and want to see/test your phone with my car I'm open to it. WHAT I BOUGHT As LuckyScooby found, there are more options today.

The video interface I'm using is from the outfit named GSM Server in Hong Kong. At the time of my purchase they were only on alibaba.com, a sort of flea market between Chinese sellers and the world. I paid about $300 total including DSL shipping + PayPal fees + Credit Card currency conversion fees.

Their customer service sucked but they later blamed it on a guy 'who doesn't work here anymore' and things improved after I told them I would not say anything good about them on SLKWorld. In the end, they came through and deserve your consideration. Diy beauty guide. Frankly, their box, the 'W211 video interface benz' works great for me and I recommend it. It has 3 video inputs: one dedicated to back up cam, two more you can use or not. I have one connected to the iPhone and a video jack in the glove box for 'future expansion.' Maybe a night vision camera will someday own that connector.

Since then, GSM Server, aka car-solutions.com, has added a store on eBay. Their W211 that works with the SLK version of COMAND NTG1 comes and goes in their store, but is available on their web site. My message earlier in the post has the link. So, you can trust buying from these guys in China.

Also, I'm using the SKIVA AV cable, not the Apple one. They are about the same price but the SKIVA also outputs component video, so it's like two Apple cables for the price of one; not required for this but nice to have the option for the future. Note that I have an iPhone 4s and it is jailbroken. If you didn't previously jailbrake your iPhone phone you can no longer do it unless you are running something older than the latest version of iOS, i.e. You need iOS 6.1.2 or older. It's looking like the jailbreak team is not going to try on 6.1.3 but just wait until 7, but you never know.

If anybody has an Android phone and composite video cable, let us see some pics showing landscape mode and screen mirroring using composite video out for Google Maps and a nice music player with album art. Just found this stickie (thanks Woolly) and will love to have some of these enhanced features on my COMAND system, especially the rear-cam and the iPhone connection and the Google link (so cool). I live in So Cal and can certainly do a drive up to Camarillo if necessary. Is the offer still good to have anyone from So Cal come up and get this done???? I am up for it. I have been looking at spending $249 for the 2012 Navi map upgrade, but for what SCBR has done here, I'd rather put that money into the kits and accessories for these upgrades. All the alternatives that LuckyScooby posted look good.

I'm completely happy with my GSM Server choice but I'm intrigued by the USA one from Navtool's claims of newest technology and higher image quality. At the time of my installation it was a version 1.0 that looked like what I bought from Hong Kong. If the screen image looks a little better I'd probably try to sell mine to swap for that one even though it retails for twice the price.

I'm satisfied with having only a single video input besides the backup cam. Otherwise, everything discussed seems comparable. Offhand the Korean one looks the same as the Hong Kong one I've got except it has a slicker looking box for the interface. Might be the same internals.

The SLKStore claims it uses a better design without relays. No problem hearing an occasional little click but if it's less to wear out and probably less 'bounce' on the circuitry those are real improvements for the long run. It's the most expensive in this batch. Regarding having a momentary switch to trigger things: although the included button was originally not for me, I'm toying with the idea of using some sort of thin film button slipped behing the SERV button on COMAND or converting that dead button in the row with door locks and AirScarf. Wiring it to the leads for the momentary switch.

Just to try it out. You can (and will) bench test the COMAND. It fires up using 12 volts like a car radio, it just can't do fancy stuff without its peripherals. If we could talk all these vendors into providing a test unit it would make for a very interesting CNET-style comparison. (raised eyebrow while scratching chin) Regarding the NAVI DVD, further out on my project list is to investigate upgrading the trunk mounted navi computer DVD drive to use solid state storage. Not sure if it's possible w/ the embedded system firmware but we'll find out.

Any other ethical hackers out there for when we start on that project? Anybody got a spare NAVI computer lying around we could borrow and promise to return in the same condition? I can't go without mine. For the meantime, I've upgraded to latest DVD each year so if yours is much older & you're interesting in getting the previous release PM with a reasonable offer.
