I have a Toro 'Wheelhorse' 16-38 HXL that just broke the mower belt. I happen to have one that seemed to be the correct sizer in the shed and put it on. Now when the PTO is OFF with the mowing deck raised, there is enough tension for the engine pulley to try and turn the mower. This caused the belt to heat up and smoke.

Finally figured out that there is a safety feature that when the PTO is OFF, there are pads that push up against the mower pulleys to keep them from moving (and turning the blades). When the mower is all the way lowered with the PTO off, the tension is low around the engine pulley and it doesn't want to return the mower pulleys. If that all makes sense, does anyone know if there is a way to reduce tension on the mower belt about an inch or so?

The 300, 400. And 500 series attach-a-matic is much better design. I am working on my daughter's 16-38HXL now.

There is a lot of slack in the mower belt when it is disengaged, with the original belt. I think the way to go is the correct belt.

One way to get more slack in the belt is to put the engagement cable hook in the lower hole on the engagement arm, if it isn't there already. You can look through the fins on the right side of the tower and see which hole it is in. You may have to slide the fuel tank out of the way to access the cable to move it. I won't guarantee moving the cable attachment point will fix your problem.
